Herb Chambers Lexus was the event sponsor. Teams were sponsored by Dedham
Savings Bank, Eastern Bank, Shaw’s Supermarkets, Goloboy CPA LLC, PTOs
and PTSOs from all of the public schools, and other generous organizations.
Thank you to all of the sponsors, participants, and audience members who
made this a success. A special thank-you to Shaw’s for providing all of the
fifth-grade participants with goody bags.
Heights music teacher, Scott Tarantino, and his students entertained the
crowd as it arrived with the energetic marimba music of the Tungurura
Marimba Ensemble, which was started through a SEF grant. John Marcus,
principal of the Cottage Street School, returned as MC, adding humor
between spelling words. The esteemed judges were State Senator
Brian A. Joyce, Professor/Author/Criminologist Jack Levin, and Shaw’s
Sharon Personnel Coordinator Crystal Corpening.
There were four fifth-grade teams, one representing each elementary school.
The fifth graders held their own, successfully spelling words such as
“giraffe”, “genius”, and “extinct”. Ultimately, all but the victorious
Cougar Kids were stumped by “militia”. The winners were Paige Andler,
Ryan McCann, and Emi Titus.
The 15 adult swarms were comprised of teachers, parents, and community
members from local organizations like Boosters, PTSOs, Hadassah, and
Hertz Nursery School. Central Hive was composed of Superintendent Dr.
Barbara Dunham, Assistant Superintendent Tim Farmer, and Director of
Student Services Steve Kaplan, who wore authentic beekeeping outfits.
The adults competed well through four rounds of tough words, such as
“wainscot”, “jodhpur”, ”Palladian”, and “maxillae”.

The teams were barely re-seated for the Champ-BEE-on-ship round,
when Bee-Jeweled dazzled us once again with their brilliance, properly
spelling the very first word, “graphorrhea”. The Queen Bees are
Allison Schnipper, Melissa Leonard, Tara Goodwin-Frier.
This year we were able to raise over $5,000 through sponsors and
donations. This money will be used to fund grants for innovative
programs in the Sharon public schools. We thank everybody who participated
for helping us to make the Bee such a success.
