Watch for upcoming info on our 4th Annual Lee Flaxer
Award!
The Lee Flaxer Award is awarded to an individual who makes the
difference in the lives of children through dedication and personal
involvement. Lee Flaxer was an admired and beloved educator in the
Sharon Public Schools for many years.
The Sharon Education Foundation is reviewing nominations for
the 2009 Lee Flaxer Award. The award is given in the spirit of Lee
Flaxer, who served as principal of Heights Elementary School for
many years. She was an outstanding leader who demonstrated that
compassion and caring were essential to a positive learning atmosphere.
The recipient of this award should be a person who has had an impact
on the lives of children through dedication and personal involvement.
Past recipients were Roland James (2006), John Brande (2007) and
Meg Verret (2008). The Lee Flaxer Award is not limited to teachers.
Other individuals, who play important roles in education within
the Sharon schools or within the town generally, will be considered.
Thank you for taking the time to consider a worthy recipient for
this award.

“Meg”, as she is known throughout the community, has
had a great impact on the children of Sharon through her dedication
and personal involvement with nursing care and health education.
She began her career as a school nurse, for the Town of Sharon,
24 years ago. At that time, she was the only registered nurse for
3 Sharon elementary schools. She served a population of approximately
1,350 students.
Meg worked with Lee Flaxer at Heights Elementary, for nearly 7
years, until December 1990, when a registered school nurse was hired
for each school. She has been at the Cottage Street School for the
past 17 years. Within the school setting, she wrote, piloted and
taught HIV/AIDS curriculum for grades 3 and 4 in 1994. She has been
active professionally, as a longtime member of MSNO/NASN, and has
served as treasurer for that organization. She served on the Joint
Health and Safety team and helped adopt and implement EPA’s
“Tools for Schools” program in 1998 to assess and improve
indoor air quality in the Sharon Public Schools. She served on the
sexual harassment and substance abuse policy committees, and worked
on the safety and crisis intervention procedures manual.
We are thrilled to present Meg Verret with this prestigious award.
Her dedication and talent as a nurse at the Sharon Elementary Schools
has affected thousands of students. Her hard work and respect for
her students is given back to her in kind and many students have
claimed that the lessons they learned from her continue long after
they leave the Sharon elementary schools. Her influence reaches
beyond the nurse’s office in the way she supports her students
outside the academic arena by attending and supporting their extracurricular
activities.
